Description

Bath Abbey Cemetery opened in 1844 as a private Anglican cemetery. It superseded Bath Abbey which was closed to further burials. It was financed by William John Brodrick (7th Viscount Midleton) who was rector of Bath Abbey in the period 1839-1854. While he was rector, he was entitled to the revenue. The site covers 2ha (5 acres), and overlooks the town with a view of the Abbey’s tower and, beyond that, Lansdown. Over its approximately 225m length, the elevation drops by 20m going from south to north. There were over 6,400 burials and there are about 2,000 surviving memorials. In the 1860s, when ward-based cemeteries administered by burial boards were established to cater for both Anglicans and non-Anglicans, no comparable cemetery was established for the parish of St Peter & St Paul/ Abbey ward. Bath Record Office’s Bath Burial Index (https://www.batharchives.co.uk/) has online documentation produced by Phil Bendall for this cemetery based on the burial registers, the Abbey Archives’ burial order books and a survey. This includes a history of the cemetery, images of surviving memorials, transcriptions of the inscriptions and maps of the individual sections. It also identifies various nationally and locally notable individuals. The records are not limited to those with memorials.
