Description

This burial ground is the third for the parish of Widcombe & Lyncombe. In 1825 the parish bought the house and gardens of the property formerly occupied by the von Luders family. The house was made into the parish's second Poor House and the gardens into a burial ground. The church of St Mark’s (which later became the parish church for Lyncombe) opened in 1832. It did not have its own registers until 1843. It was closed in 1855 and the rate of burials diminished further when the ward-based Lyncombe & Widcombe and St James’ cemetery opened in 1861. St Mark’s burial ground occupies 0.3 ha (0.75 acre) with 5,700 burials and is much smaller than Bath Abbey Cemetery (2ha) with about 4,000 burials. Bath Record Office’s Bath Burial Index (https://www.batharchives.co.uk/burial-index) has online documentation by Phil Bendall of the graveyard including images of the memorials, transcriptions of inscriptions, maps and images of memorials within the church.
