Description

This cemetery has no church/chapel (is on unconsecrated ground) but was built in 1829 after the formation in 1825 of the Westgate Hill Cemetery Company, who set out to raise £3500 in shares to build a cemetery open 'to the whole human family without difference and distinction'. It is a 3 acre Grade 2 listed cemetery. However, it has suffered a lot of damage and neglect, is not maintained to a great extent and is freely accessible at all times, and is therefore controversial locally. The cemetery was also the scene of a 1984 graverobbing case involving members of the band Metgumbnerbone. One of the 1st 10 commercial cemeteries to open in England and the 1st in Newcastle. Originally had more elaborate paths. Includes a marked grave for an 18-month Iowa Native American baby ('Corsair') who died while his parents were in the country as part of a'cultural' tour - he actually died in Dundee but was buried in Newcastle at his parents' request, as they had earlier stayed there with a Quaker family. The inscription reads: 'THE GRAVE OF CORSAIR INFANT SON OF SHON-TA-YIGA AND OKEE-WEME NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS OF THE IOWAY TRIBE WHO DIED AT DUNDEE 8TH OF 2ND MONTH 1845 AGED 8 MONTHS. THE REMAINS WERE INTERRED AT NEWCASTLE BY DESIRE OF THE AFFLICTED PARENTS'.
