Cemetery Description

Formerly St Paul\'s Church & Chapel, built in 1841. There were at least 2200 burials here until 1854, when burial records cease. It is unclear whether the burial ground was closed at this point or whether records were no longer maintained by the Church of England. The churchyard was converted into a recreation area called the Dotchin Garden of Rest. In 1934 the church building became the Gem cinema, and was demolished in 1967. Some headstones survive propped against the back of the current green space. See http://www.twsitelines.info/smr/6443 and http://www.tynesidesilentcities.com/page_stpaulsburialground.htm
