Description

Windy Gully cemetery was established in 1902 as the final resting place for 33 victims of the 1902 Mt Kembla mine disaster. On 31st July 1902 an explosion in the mine killed 95 workers, with another dying later of his injuries. It remains Australia's worst ever industrial accident. Initially a mass grave was dug on the company owned land at Windy Gully to bury the dead, however most were subsequently re-interred. 33 were buried in Windy Gully, another 32 in the Soldiers and Miners Anglican Cemetery in Mt Kembla, 24 in Wollongong Cemetery and the remaining 5 were buried elsewhere.
