York Cemetery

Established in 1837, York Cemetery was opened to help cope with the overcrowded and unsanitary churchyards and parochial burial grounds scattered throughout the City. The first entry in the Burial Register occurred on 21 January 1837. There are over 124,500 burials in some 28,000 graves recorded. This includes 152 casualties from the First World War and 85 from the Second World War. York Cemetery continues in active use.

The Volunteer Genealogists provide a Grave Finder Service which is outlined on their website. The Service provides Register Database Printouts which give detailed information about the person including personal and burial details, grave occupancy, grave purchase details and memorial inscriptions. The volunteers can provide photographs of the grave and people buried (where available) as well as an A4 sized map showing the approximate position of the grave within the Cemetery.
