Description

The name of this historic pioneer cemetery was derived from two prominent hills rising from the prairies of Indian Territory in the 1880s. The oldest known burial at the cemetery dates back to 1891 shortly after "Uncle Dump" Berryhill, a Pentecostal preacher, donated the tract for use as a cemetery. Today the cemetery is well maintained in light of its age. However the graveyard was very neglected until 1992 when Gene Sivadon organized efforts to restore and protect the cemetery including the fiery sign which calls for "the curse of God" to fall on anyone who desecrates it. One unique feature of the cemetery relates to the 1990s efforts to save the cemetery. Caretakers have erected signs at or near the grave markers with stories about deceased so memories about them will live forever. A 1997 Tulsa World article reported that surviving family members of those buried in the cemetery provided the information for the signs, and in many cases, paid for the signs themselves. As of April, 2015, we and Tony Rockefeller took pictures of each surviving tombstone and transcribed. Our survey matches up well with the limited surviving records of the cemetery which reflects names for only about 500 of the 3,300 grave sites. Ken and Cynthia Hunt
