Description

The graveyard surrounds the Anglican Church of St Lawrence. There are few early gravestones. There are two table tombs of late 17th/early 18th century and a headstone to Elizabeth Bayliss 1635, which are listed monuments. The remaining gravestones are nearly all late 19th century onward. There are slightly over 1600 named individuals on the surviving headstones. The church has a 12th century nave with 13th century north arcade, north aisle and chancel, and a 16th century tower that was commissioned by Abbot Parker circa 1514 and since 1913 has contained 8 bells. At the opposite end is a small bell turret. The church was restored in the late 19th Century by Ewan Christian and F S Waller & Son. There are 20th century alterations and additions. There are 18th century wall monuments in the Lady Chapel to the tenants and owners of nearby Barnwood Court. To the south of the church is a late 20th century church centre. Gravestones were relocated to other parts of the churchyard, but bodies left in situ when it was built. While the church office has partial maps, the most comprehensive and usable map of the gravestones is included with the gravestone monumental inscriptions and can be purchased as a CD or download from the Gloucestershire Family History Society (GFHS) via their website. NB Previous description removed as it referred to St Lawrence Taynton not St Lawrence Barnwood.
