Description

Part of the original grounds of St John’s Church on Darnley Road and directly opposite the entrance doors of the former church itself (see photo) this small graveyard fell into disuse following a fire in the 1940s that destroyed the roof and the adjacent Presbytery. The last burials at this site stopped around 1920’s with a notable single wartime ‘Commonwealth’ grave of Private Fox of the Royal Highland Fusileers. The remaining monuments are decaying badly. After being a ruin for many years, the site was cleared and replaced by the Columba Club in the 1970s which was used by parishioners as a social venue. The Knights of St Columba were required to respect and maintain the cemetery as part of their land burdens, but this did not occur. A fire in 2018 caused the club to close and it too is now disused, with the land being sold to a local businessman who has plans for a terrace of shops. There is no information on what will happen to the cemetery itself.
