There has been a church on this site since at least 774 AD (the building of that church was instructed by St Wilfred). The current church contains a Saxon window, Roman archway, Norman doorway, an early English archway and the much more recent Millennium Window among other features. There is a fortified pele tower outside which used to be used as a vicarage (the current vicarage is some distance from the church).
