Description

Soldiers Flat Memorial The Soldiers Flat Memorial serves as a tribute to the first semi-permanent European settlement on the Lachlan River, which was originally occupied by the local Wiradjuri people. The area known as Soldiers Flat obtained its name due to the establishment of a military depot around 1820. This military depot preceded the arrival of white settlers to a region that had been inhabited by the Wiradjuri aboriginal people for a long time. The pioneers of the Soldiers Flat area were laid to rest in a private cemetery located on the property owned by the Green and Brierley families, who settled in this area around 1840. To honor their memory, this memorial has been erected in close proximity to the site. It is accompanied by several information signs and includes a list of all individuals known to have been buried in this cemetery, dating as far back as 1862.
