Description

The Shaker Cemetery contains 445 burials dating from 1785 to 1938. In the late 19th century, as a way of addressing the maintenance challenges for the Shaker cemeteries, the Lead ministry directed communities to replace the individual gravestones with on communal marker. We are fortunate that Watervliet Shakers are one of the three communities who kept separate markers. They replaced them and repaired the cemetery in 1880. Mother Ann's stone was the same modest design as the others until it was replaced in the mid-20th century with a more prominent stone. Alvin P. Boettcher mapped each gravestone and recorded the information in 1944 for the Town of Clonie. The cemetery remains in the ownership of the Shaker Trust. Please help protect this important historic resource by not touching or leaning on any of the stones. If you are interested in further information or working with the stones in any way, please contact Shaker Heritage Society.
