Description

This Cemetery was just cleaned out and documented as an Eagle Scout Project. Directed by Alex Patterson Troop 235 From Athens Alabama Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints April 2015. The Cemetery was cleaned in 2020; Alabama Historic Commission Registration was submitted January 2021 by the MCCRA, Place 2 (Wallace). History Background: The cemetery was named Pike-Sanderson Cemetery after two prominent pioneer families who settled in the area. According to records in the Huntsville/Madison County Library, it is unknown when the Pike-Sanderson Cemetery was established in Madison County, Alabama. The first landowner was Col. David Dancy who acquired the land in 1830 under Federal Land Patent 2958. Sometime later, the land came into the possession of George Pike. No records have been found to show how or when George Pike acquired the land. In 1894 (Madison County Deed Book 74, pgs. 96-98), the descendants of George Pike sold the land, except for the burial ground of two acres, to Jere Murphy. These descendants were recorded as: James Sanderson and wife Sarah (Pike), Susanna (Pike) Sanderson, Logan Pike and wife Laura, Martha (Pike) Parvin, Levi Pike and wife Sallie, David E. Pike and wife Sarah. The Pike and Sanderson family members have historically maintained the 2 acres of the cemetery since the mid-1800s according to known records. The earliest known burial is Francis Marion Wall (1838-1863) and the last burial was William Don Foster (1927-2000). Other burials include James Crawford Drake who was a Madison County Deputy Sheriff killed in the line of duty in 1928 (No marker) and Thomas R. Crutcher (1890-1967) who was a onetime Madison County Sheriff; also, Rev. Nicholas D. Crutcher (1851-1929) who was a renowned Baptist minister of the area. Known veterans buried in the cemetery are Charles Bruce Crutcher, Hampton H. Crutcher, William Don Foster, James Sanderson, Levi Pike (son of George Pike who donated the land for the cemetery), William Sanderson, Francis M. Wall and William Wall. Registration Cards of other burials are Lawson Thomas Camper, Larkin Henry Sanderson, and Robert Frank Sadler.
