Description

Mount Hebron Cemetery is a unique community institution. It is a complex of four adjoining Burying grounds embraced within a common enclosure. The first cemetery is the oldest in the northwest corner. It surrounded the old reformed church. It contains graves dating from 1769. The second cemetery is the Lutheran Cemetery, this is just north of Mt. Hebron's Entrance. Many of these stones have German inscriptions and primitive gravestone art with skull and crossed bones. When these two congregations abandoned their churches, twelve citizens in 1843 petitioned the General Assembly of Virginia to establish a cemetery. This is how Mt. Hebron came into being. This became the third cemetery that was enlarged over time. The fourth cemetery, Stonewall Confederate Cemetery, is also part of this large cemetery complex. Stonewall Cemetery is the resting place for the bodies of 2,575 Confederate soldiers who died in the fields and hospitals of this locality. Handsome monuments have been erected here by various States and individuals, and every year since 1866 the graves are decorated and appropriate memorial ceremonies held.
