Description

Mound/Hickory Grove Cemetery (also known as McDaniel Cemetery according to several early sources) is maintained by the Nevada Township Trustees and rests on a hill encircled by rich farmland and beautiful scenery. It is accessible from a mowed, single-lane path through a pasture belonging to a local resident. Given to Trust on March 4, 1870, Sam McDaniel deeded the 2.22 acres of land to Trustees for one dollar. (Story County, Iowa, 1870). By this time, there were about half of the total number of souls interned in the cemetery. In 1918, Coleen Lou Nutty wrote a master’s thesis which included a short history of Mound. She described the cemetery as “surrounded by a rusty iron fence and overgrown with weeds and grass. Many of the stones are broken and lying on the ground, and some are covered with sod. Once must cross a corn field to reach the site. In the middle of the cemetery at the high point of the hill is a tall obelisk which juts against the horizon and when viewed from a distance gives one an eerie but compelling urge to visit the place.” (Nutty, 1918) In 1887, W.P. Allen listed 53 internments with a total of 74 souls buried in this cemetery. A cross-search of several sources has uncovered the names of 70 internments including those buried after the Allen census.
