Description

Also known as Helena Mexican Cemetery or Mexican-American Cemetery. The first burial in the cemetery was three year old Cristobal Guerra Jr. He was trampled to death by mules pulling a plow circa 1895. The owner of the land donated one acre for Cristobal's burial and this was the beginning of the "Helena Mexican Cemetery". Cristobal's memorial is under the pavilion. Descendants of the Guerra family have been buried here for more than a century (over 100 years) including Cristobal's mother (Maria Esiquia Casas Guerra 1864-1929) and paternal grandparents (Ramon and Matilde Guerra) and Guerra Descendant burials are still taking place at this cemetery. The cemetery became the "Los Mexicanos" cemetery where Mexican-Americans who met misfortune in the once "toughest town on earth" were laid to rest. Therefore, many unmarked graves and unreadable tombstones are here. Many early death certificates up to the 1960s listed the burial place as "Mexican" or "Mexican Cemetery" or "Helena Mex". The land where the cemetery is located was part of a 4 league (17,713.60 acre) Mexican Land Grant as recorded by the Texas General Land Office on June 26, 1833, Patent # 120, Patent Volume 30 awarded to Ramón Músquiz (1797-1867), a political chief of the Department of Texas from 1828-1834. Músquiz died in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico.
