Geer Cemetery is an abandoned African-American cemetery in northeast Durham, North Carolina. It has also been known as City Cemetery, Old City Cemetery, East Durham Cemetery, and Mason Cemetery. Although it contains the graves of over 1,500 African Americans - many born into slavery - only about 150 headstones remain. It was the first public cemetery for African Americans in Durham when it opened in 1876. It was closed in 1939, although there was a burial in 1944. Some sections are difficult to navigate due to numerous sunken graves.
