Description

Durant Cemetery is an African American graveyard located in Marion, SC, off South Main Street (Hwys. 41/501) at the dead end of Collins Street. It’s behind Marion High School, next to the city water treatment plant. The cemetery, like the school, sits on the former W.W. Durant plantation. The cemetery is owned by Bethel United Methodist Church and was established in 1901. A deed shows Bethel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church bought two acres from Pauline Durant, one of W.W.’s daughters, for $60 that year. Pauline sold the property west of Smith Swamp, bounded on the north by the “Grave Yard lot of the Colored Reformed Church and Holliday’s Lands,” and on the south, east and west by her land.
