Description

Dunstable Cemetery, situated in West Street, first opened as a burial facility for the people of Dunstable and the surrounding areas in 1861. Dunstable Cemetery is a 14.5 acre (6 hectare) cemetery situated on West Street, Dunstable approximately 10 minutes walk from the town centre. Victorian by design, the Cemetery has been in use for over 150 years, with the first burial recorded on 22 October 1861 as that of a child, 4 year old James Turney, the son of Thomas Turney “a groom of West Street”. There are also 48 War Graves from World War 1 and World War 2. More recently, Dunstable Town Council has refurbished the original Victorian cemetery chapel which is now available for burial services (by prior arrangement) or quiet reflection for passers-by. Graves within the Cemetery are arranged in sections determined on faith grounds and they are currently split into consecrated (Church of England) and non-consecrated (all other faiths) sections with separate sections for the burial of children. Garden of Rest sections are provided for the burial of cremated remains. The cemetery grounds are open to the public daily throughout the year and funerals are accepted, by prior arrangement, between the hours of 8.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday (excepting Public Holidays).
