Description

The history of the cemetery revolves around three generations of one family. Revolutionary War soldier Hezekiah Cartwright and his wife Hannah Lavender from North Carolina had a son, John Cartwright. John married Mary Polly Dillard in Wilson Co, TN and had a son, Hezekiah Bradley (H.B) Cartwright in Tennessee. The family moved to Limestone County, Alabama around 1825 where they farmed and maintained two stores. From the Cartwright family line, it is Hezekiah Bradley Cartwright buried in the Cartwright Cemetery. Hezekiah Bradley (H.B) Cartwright is one of the first pioneers of the area who served in the Creek War where he received a land grant of 41 acres in 1849 when it was called Madison Station (now known as Madison). He served as one of the first Postmasters in Limestone County, Alabama. His sons were in the Civil War and played a key role in the community. The first known burial is of Thomas E. Crutcher and the last known burial is of Hezekiah Bradley Cartwright who owned the land when the cemetery was thought to be established. Family burials include H.B.C, Hezekiah Bradley Cartwright, Chaney Crutcher, Thomas E. Crutcher, and MRR.
