Eighty one men and boys died in the Bulli disaster on 23 March 1887. The violence of the explosion had been such that many bodies were unable to be identified. Three quarters of those killed are buried in the Bulli Anglican Church Cemetery near the memorial. The memorial list the names of those killed. The names of those who were killed in the 1965 disaster were added to the memorial at a later date.
