Description

This cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Wellington. It was created in 1840 for the new Wellington colony and is divided into Jewish, Anglican and \"Public\" areas. The history of colonisation is captured in the headstones. Those buried include soldiers who defended the new colony, large settler families, eminent Maori, politicians and community leaders. The deaths recall the disease, accidents and skirmishes that faced new colonists. The cemetery is now dissected by the Wellington Motorway, built in the 1960\'s. The construction caused over 3,700 graves to be transferred to a mass grave with the headstones being re-located.
