Marion Young, 86, of Anacortes, Washington, died peacefully Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in her home with family present.

She was born on March 23, 1923 in Bowdle, South Dakota, the daughter of Theodosius and Cecilia Bachman, German-Russian emigrants from the Ukraine. They were farmers and she was one of seven children. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to Tacoma and worked for a short time before enlisting in the United States Navy. While stationed at Moffett Field, California, she met her husband Ralph, who was also in the Navy. They were married on May 12, 1944 and had three sons, David, Daniel, and Richard.

She was a Navy wife for 24 years moving repeatedly to fit the needs of the Navy and making a home wherever they were stationed. After retiring from the Navy, they settled in Northern California, Yuba City, where her husband worked for California Division of Highways. Following retirement from the State of California, they retired and moved to Nevada City, California, where she enjoyed the mountains, wildlife, family and friends, and the life of a small community. She was always active in her church, teaching children and working with the altar society.

Marion's husband of 50 years passed away in 1994 and she spent her last fifteen years residing with her eldest son, David, a Catholic priest and Navy Chaplain. For the past five years, their home has been Anacortes, Washington. Her son Daniel is a law enforcement officer with Butte County Sheriff's Department in Oroville, California. Her son Richard lives in Tucson, Arizona.
Marion is survived by one sister, Josephine, in San Diego, California, four grandchildren, and one great grandson.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on July 11, 2009. Marion wanted her final resting place to be with her mother, father, and other Bachman family members in the cemetery in Bowdle, South Dakota, but her memory will forever reside and the hearts and minds of her loving family and friends.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
