BillionGraves Historical Records

Known variously as Dalbeth Cemetery or the Good Shepherd Cemetery (see below), St Peter’s is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow. Originally opened in 1863 it is still in current use, and has the distinction of generating its own electricity, courtesy of a single wind turbine on the southern boundary.

There is an international aspect to this burial ground, with many Polish and Italian deceased resting in their own sections of this massive cemetery. That said, it is open to all denominations.

The original Dalbeth Cemetery was laid out in the early 19th century, as part of the grounds of Dalbeth House which was converted to a Convent in 1851. Indeed, many of the nuns who worked here are buried in a centralised grave with a large memorial installed on the southern boundary wall of the original cemetery.  As space became a premium, the closing of the Convent - now known as the Convent of the Good Shepherd which doubled as an Approved School and rehabilitation centre for 150 girls and women) in 1949 meant more of the land could be used for additional burials, and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd moved to a new facility in Renfrewshire. The ruined building was eventually demolished in 1996, but the original red sandstone priest’s house remains, and is now a private residence. Graves in Section 8 are located within the footprint of the Convent’s foundations.

The church associated with the Convent/School (St Peter’s) itself closed in 1975 with the London Road cemetery entrance being blocked, and a new entrance created by opening a gap from the St Peter’s grounds, but by this time no internments were taking place here.
