01/16/2026In the spring of 1864, Berney entered the Confederate army in Hallonquiest's Reserve of artillery and served as ordnance sergeant until the end of the war. He was employed by the South and North Alabama Railroad. In 1871, he persuaded the railroad to transfer him to Birmingham as its agent. Having attracted the attention of Charles Linn, the president of The National Bank of Birmingham, in 1873, he was employed as a clerk.
Through promotions, he became president of the bank upon Linn's death in 1882. - by FAG volunteer Bham85 Id#48240040
