Anders Nielsen & Cathrine Pedersen Story

Contributor: MargieW Created: 7 months ago Updated: 7 months ago

Story Provided by V Jensen ANDERS NIELSEN & CATHERINE SOPHIE PEDERSEN 1812-1899, 1828-1903 Anders Nielsen was born October 31, 1812, at Lystrus, Presto Amt,Denmark, son of Niels Andersen and Annie Christoffersen of Hyllede,Presto Amt, Denmark. We know but very little of the early boyhood days of Anders, but as he grew older, he started to work on large farms. In the summers, he helped in the harvesting of crops; he learned the art of cradyling of wheat. In the winter, he looked after the stock. While working on a certain farm for a wealthy farmer, he met a young girl who was also working there, Catherine Sophie Pedersen the daughter of Peter Pedersen and Kjersten Nielsen Hansen. She was the supervisor of the dairy work. He saw how well she did her work and thought she would make a good companion and help mate for him, so he asked her to be his wife. After a short time she consented and they were married in 1851.Catherine was born March 27, 1828, They started their home life in a humble way. They lived in a small two-roomed house. Anders worked very hard in the fields. He would go early in the morning and come home late at night. In the year of 1852, there was one more added to this family life, a little daughter named Annie Christine born on the 13 of November. She was their first child and they were very proud of her. While living in Denmark, they saw the missionaries quite often, but it seemed as if Anders was not ready to hear their message and paid very little attention to them. Catherine had the Spirit of the Lord with her and begged Anders to listen. They would ask the missionaries to come and stay with them, and Catherine was always ready to help them. The missionaries told them much about the Gospel and the Bible. Anders said the Bible was for the poor because the rich did not believe in it. He read the Bible at night while Catherine sat and spun. In this way they learned much about the Bible and what the missionaries told them. A few years later, Catherine wanted to be baptized, but Anders did not think she was ready for it so forbade it. About a year later, he consented for her to be baptized. Then, seeing he might be left alone, he was baptized also one year after Catherine. There were a group of Saints going to emigrate to Utah, and Catherine thought it would be nice to go along, too. But Anders was not willing,he would rather stay in Denmark. However, he decided to go along later. They sold most all of their things so they had quite a bit of money and were quite well-to-do. Anders had some money in the bank, and they paid an honest tithing as well as paying for three other emigrants. They started in March 1862. They were seven weeks on the ocean. While crossing the ocean, Catherine took very sick. She had a revelation from God. She told Anders to go to the cook and have some flour mush made which she ate and it helped her very much. Anders was sick too, but he would not eat any of the flour mush, They landed in Florence sometime in June and waited here seven weeks for the church wagons to come for their supplies. As soon as they came, they had all their things packed in them and started for Utah. They walked most of the way pushing handcarts. While in Florence, a very bad storm came and took about all the things they had. They laid all night holding to the side of their tent for fear it would blow away. Catherine said she was glad to bear these trials for the Gospel's sake. Anders paid eighty dollars to get their things here, but through a mistake of the captain, they had to pay it again. Crossing the plains was very hard. Sometimes we think we have it hard but let us think of the trials they had. They left their homes in old Denmark, and then were driven out of their homes. We ought to be thankful for the things we have and the good times in which we live. Anders came to Utah September 27, 1862, with the John R. Murdock Company. When they arrived, they came to Brigham City as soon as possible. They found friends who took them in and gave them a home until they were able to get one of their own. Catherine prayed to the Lord that He would open the way for them to get a little place of their own. In a short time, they were able to get a lot on which was a cellar. In the cellar they lived for some time. Early the next spring, they began to build them a home. Catherine helped with the masonry. The house was soon completed and they were very thankful, too. Thirteen years after their first child was born, another was added to the family, a son named Jonathan Nielsen Anderson. His birthday is December13, 1865. Anders helped to build the roads in Box Elder County. He also helped in the building of Brigham City. He was also a builder of the Gospel of our Lord. He was ordained an Elder a short time after he came to Brigham City and then several years later was ordained a High Priest. He held this office until his death. Anders helped in the fields. He was a friend to everyone and everyone liked him. Anders entered into plural marriage. One source says he was married inSalt Lake City on October 12, 1878. The other records the ceremony Logan, Cache, Utah on November 20, 1889. His second wife was Mette Christina Nelsen Pedersen the daughter of Niels Pedersen and Annie Rasmussen who came to Utah August 20, 1883. She was born December 19,1838, in Denmark. Anders died June 20, 1899, and Catherine died March 21, 1903. Christina died January 25, 1917. The families lived at Brigham City, Utah. Annie Christina married Peter Johnson May 9, 1868. Jonathan Nielsen married Ellen M. Tingey November 19, 1885. Modified 26 August 2013 by vjensen2727078

Jonathan Nielsen Andersen was 51 years old when Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was forced to abdicate in the February Revolution, ending three centuries of Romanov rule. Nicholas II or Nikolai II, known as Saint Nicholas in the Russian Orthodox Church, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March 1917. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the executions of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Soviet historians portray Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.

Jonathan Nielsen Andersen was 74 years old when World War II: Nazi Germany and Slovakia invade Poland, beginning the European phase of World War II. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
