Near this place is interred ye body of the Honorable Brigadeer General William Steuart who died the 10th day of November 1736. Having served for 37 years. A commissioned officer in the reigns of their Majesties King William, Queen Ann & King George 1st for the last 24 of which, He had ye honor to be a field officer, & as such commanded a Regiment of Foot in several of ye most considerable actions during the late wars in Flanders, Spain & Portugal, wherein he distinguished himself, as well by his great understanding in military discipline, as an undoubted courage, particularly after ye Battle of Almanza in Spain, when he threw himself with 300 men into the Castle of Alcyra & by a brave resistance sustained ye attack of the whole French and Spanish Army, by which means the English forces gained time to retreat into Catalonia.

He married ye honorable Mary Villiers who in testimony of her gratitude to a most kind and affectionate husband , erected this monument to his memory.
