“Who after 47 years and six months of distinguished service partly in the field partly as secretary to gov. in military depts. And finally as a member of the supreme counsel. When about to return to his native country crowned with merit and honor and distinctions was swayed by a sense of duty to accede to the pressing instance of the governor General in council to defer his departure a step which exposed him to attack of the fatal malady which terminated his valuable life at Cossipore on 16 April 1844”
This is an impressive elaborate tomb - the base has a long description of the man therein and his career and also mentions "a fatal malady". It is surmounted by a casket draped with a cloak, and is further enhanced by four draped figures holding up a roof over the whole edifice.
The casket inscription says - Sacred to the memory of Major Ge. The Hon. Sir William Casement. KFC. B. of the Bengal Army and Member of the Supreme Council of India.
There is much text on the bottom half of the tomb not entirely decipherable because of mould and moss, but it talks about his merits distinctions and honour.
