A letter written by Audrey Hall Ruesch about her brother, Dee on July 3, 1970. Dear Sisters, I’ve tried to write a few thoughts on mama for the history. I didn’t do much on daddy, but will, so you can have it latter (right now it’s hard to concentrate as I have Dayna on one side and Tina on the other asking questions, etc. but wanted to get mom’s sent off today.) On Dee’s-He didn’t say too much on how he felt, but once in awhile he said some little thing to let you know that he had deep, religious thoughts and love for Dad and Mom and the family. He was brave enough to be himself with no disguise or artificial put on. After mom and dad passed away he had tears in his eyes when he told me he guessed he’d have to quit smoking and go to the temple the way mom wanted him to. I think he really had the desire to do as they wished and I know from what you told me, Rill, when you had your operation, that he is ready now and waiting for that desire to be fulfilled. I always felt protective toward him and in school would fight like a little old hen if anyone made fun of him. I know he loved us and could only express himself in his gruff way. Even his nickname for me, “Red” sounded tender whenever he said it. He knew more about the church and church doctrine than we ever suspected and what he read he remembered; almost to the letter. When Cleo and I cleaned his trailer after he passed away we found his improvement Era’s which showed signs of having been read and Cleo said he also read the Relief Society Magazine. Every once in awhile he’d come up with some remark regarding an article in the Era. He could remember dates and names and incidents which made you feel weird sometimes. He kept troubles and illnesses to himself and only by accident did we know of them. He was slow but very thorough in anything that he did. I hope this will help, I enjoyed reading mom’s history, it was done so beautifully. I read it aloud to Tina because she said, “Grandma, I don’t know anything about your mother.” I think the title Mother would be just fine. Please correct “my mistakes and misses and call them hugs and kisses.” Love to all, Aud and Lyman.
