Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - Tuesday, August 19, 1997 Deceased Name: Death: Victor Waddoups Victor Waddoups, age 93, died at home on August 16, 1997 after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. Victor was born to William and Eliza Jane Stephenson Waddoups on December 31, 1903 in Lewiston, Utah. He grew up on a farm, where he learned the value of hard work. He was educated in Cache County schools. He was a businessman and owned a service station, grocery store and a ready-to-wear store. In 1947, he retired from business and moved to Logan, Utah, where he worked at Utah State University. On July 28, 1926 he married Thelma Bean in the Logan Temple. They are the parents of two daughters. They were constant companions for seventy-one years. They moved to Orem in 1977. Victor was an active member of the LDS Church having served as counselor in the bishopric, twice as a bishop, member of the High Council, stake patriarch, and officiator in the Logan and Provo Temples. He and his wife served two full-time missions together. Victor is survived by his devoted wife and two daughters, Zola Marie Mulhern (Neal), of Lindon, and Lois Mignon Poulsen (Larry), of Orem; ten grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters, six of whom died in infancy. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 21, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Park 6th Ward Chapel, 114 S. 400 W., in Orem. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State St. in Orem and also Thursday one hour prior to the services at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Victor Waddoups was 10 years old when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated by a Yugoslav nationalist named Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo, sparking the outbreak of World War I. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria-Este was a member of the imperial Habsburg dynasty, and from 1896 until his death the heir presumptive (Thronfolger) to the Austro-Hungarian throne. His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia, which in turn triggered a series of events that resulted in Austria-Hungary's allies and Serbia's declaring war on each other, starting World War I.

Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21.5 hours on the lunar surface before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit.
