Verge Heaps

Coming to Utah and visiting my grandparents was the highlight of my year. We lived in California and they were in Utah. Grandma and Grandpa Heaps had a fruit farm in the benches of Orem. I thought is was so fun to come visit them and pick cherries. Grandpa was always working out in the orchards. I loved his white hair and his smile. He was raised in Escalante, Utah. His mother died when he was little, his father remarried and his stepmother did not like him very well. He was sent off at age 8 to raise cattle and he did this by himself. My grandfather had a rough life and I believe that is one reason he was kind of a gruff man. I never saw the gruff side of him but my cousins said he was hard on them. He did the best he knew how. I remember one winter visiting and he took a big wood plank and drove it behind his truck and dragged us like a big sled. It was so fun and something I had never experienced in my life. Our family always hugged when we saw relatives. My grandfather would always give me a big hug when he saw me, the other cousins said we were the only grandchildren that received hugs.

There were an estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, and more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service and was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line. It was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, her architect, died in the disaster.

It had its origins in the missile-based nuclear arms race between the two nations that occurred following World War II, aided by captured German missile technology and personnel from the Aggregat program. The technological superiority required for such dominance was seen as necessary for national security, and symbolic of ideological superiority. The Space Race spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, uncrewed space probes of the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and to the Moon.
