**THOMAS...Seaman aboard USS Leviathan 1917-1919. ((Repainted with the British-type "dazzle" camouflage scheme in Feb 1918 that she carried for the rest of the war, Leviathan began regular passages between the US & Brest, France, delivering up to 14,000 persons on each trip. Before the armistice 11 Nov 1918 the ship transported over 119,000 fighting men. Among the ship's US Navy crew during this period was future film star Humphrey Bogart. Bogart served as Chief Quartermaster, senior enlisted man of the Navigation Div. After that date Leviathan, repainted grey overall by Dec 1918, reversed the flow of men as she transported our veterans back to the US with nine westward crossings ending 8 Sept 1919. On 29 Oct 1919, USS Leviathan was decommissioned & turned over to the US Shipping Board & laid up at Hoboken, NJ until plans for her future employment could be determined. In 1937 she was finally sold to British Metal Industries Ltd. On 26 Jan 1938 Leviathan set out on her 301st & last voyage under the command of Captain John Binks)).
