Scoffiled Mine disaster story

Contributor: trishkovach Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

Story of the Scoffiled Mining Disaster, as told to me by my Grandmother, Mary Grace Hansen Hansing. John Gatherum was the maternal grandfather of Mary Grace Hansen Hansing. Tom, Willie and James Gatherum were killed in the Scoffield Mining Disaster on May 1, 1900. John Gatherum was called to identify the bodies of his relatives. When he arrived, all the bodies were laid out on the ground with sheets covering them. As John walked over to one of the bodies, he saw a familiar foot sticking out from under the sheets. He said, “you don’t need to uncover that body, I can recognize who it is by the foot.” A photo of some of the bodies of victims from the Scoffield mine disaster, temporarily placed under sheets in the local schoolroom, awaiting identification can be found on the MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) website.
