Bound for California by wagon train, the family of seven was attacked by Indians at Rock Creek Station, Wyoming Territory on July 31, 1865. Badly wounded, his wife killed and daughters Mary and Elizabeth captured, Jasper and sons William, Jasper and Oscar escaped and make their way to Salt Lake City.
