I was truly blessed as a child with a wonderful grandmother. (written 19 June 1959)

Contributor: doddemagen Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

I was truly blessed as a child with a wonderful grandmother. She was one of my best friends. After my Grandfather died (1948), she spent her time doing genealogy research and commuted between Sequim, Washington, and Sacramento, California, in her spare time. There was always a letter in the mail between us and she was indeed an important influence in my life. When my Grandfather had been gone ten years, Grandma became very ill and after many tests it was determined that she was a victim of cancer. She lived about four months after that and died in January, 1956. In the back of my mind, I had always dreamed of Grandma as being at my wedding. As a child I dreamed of this. From the time a little girl begins playing house, she dreams of her own wedding. Grandma died when I was seventeen, one month before my husband stepped into the spotlight. My father felt the responsibility of having Grandpa's work done even more now that grandma had joined him. Grandpa was born and raised in the church but Grandma never had joined and couldn't quite accept it all. Father sent in the family group sheet and started the work on it's way. By this time, my husband and I had set our date, August 17, 1956, and Dad was planning to go through for Grandpa the same day. All the time I felt regret that Grandma wouldn't be at my wedding. The time drew nearer and the excitement grew and grew. It was the day of our wedding and to get there we had to travel from Sacramento, Calif., to Los Angeles. My husband's parents came from Murray, Utah, to be with us on our day. We entered the temple and in the excitement there was a misunderstanding about a name for my mother to do work for. For some reason, there wasn't a name for her to do and she was sent to another section of the temple where on the top of the stack was Grandma's name. By some miracle, my grandmother's baptism had been done August 4, 1956, and her name was ready for endowment. We had thought there had to be a period of a year before any work could be done. What a wonderful day! Mom went through the temple for Grandma Clawson and Dad for Grandpa Clawson. After our marriage, Grandma and Grandpa were sealed for eternity and my Father and a brother who died in infancy were sealed to them. Grandma was not only at my wedding but she was sealed to Grandpa on the very same day. What a testimony this is to me. May I do my share in this marvelous work that is here for us to do. May this be an inspiration to someone.
