Fishing with Granddad

Contributor: Todd Millett Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

Rodney Pehrson is my grandfather. My earliest recollection of fishing is with him. Most days when we went it was me, granddad, & his best friend Fred Jensen. The day would start early in his garden to dig some fresh worms. With our can of worms in our hands, we drove to Monticello Lake. We'd position ourselves on the dam side of the lake. Granddad would get my pole ready for me. Each pole was set with 2 hooks baited with fresh worms. Once I was situated with my pole, Granddad would bait his own pole and sit down next to me. Within 5 minutes, he would have a strike and more times than not, he would have 2 fish on at the same time! I began to think that something was wrong with my pole and I'd want to fish with his pole. So he would bait his pole & we would switch. 5-10 minutes later, he'd have a strike on my pole, and more times than not, he again would have 2 fish! My luck & Fred Jensen's luck was about the same. I did catch my share, but nothing compared to Granddad! Kim Burtenshaw (grandson)

Granddad's chickens

Most of my childhood Granddad & Grandma Pehrson averaged 60 laying hens. They sold the extra eggs and at the end of every summer, butcher some of the older hens as stew meat. Probably my favorite childhood memory with my grandparents was when we'd butcher these hens. The favored mode of slaughter was to chop off their heads. Granddad and I thought that was the funniest thing to watch the hens run around the barnyard with no heads; sometimes lasting 8-10 minutes! My sisters thought it was gross. Granddad and I just laughed and laughed. Kim Burtenshaw (grandson)

The technological superiority required for such dominance was seen as necessary for national security, and symbolic of ideological superiority.
