In the spring of 1847, Robert T. Thomas was with the first company of faithful followers who set out from Winter Quarters, under Brigham Young, on the long journey west. He arrived in the valley on July 22, 1847, and helped establish the Utah settlement. Robert T. Thomas was in the company of 33 men sent by Brigham Young in March 1849 to settle Ft. Field near Utah Lake. Mary Ann Turner taught school in the old fort in Utah County. Mary Ann and Robert were married in the old fort on April 18, 1850.
