Phillip M. Haymond, age 73, passed away on November 7, 2007 in Baltimore, MD, after a long and valiant fight with lymphoma. He was born October 11, 1934 in Springville, Utah, the oldest of six children born to Paul Marchbanks Haymond and Faye Averett Haymond Madsen. Phil attended school in Springville, UT where he was academically and athletically recognized. He gave the Valedictorian speech for his class at both Springville Junior High and High School. He excelled in sports, lettering in both football and tennis. Phil and tennis partner Douglas Smoot were Utah State Doubles Champions in 1951. He chose to use his Naval ROTC scholarship to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, New York, where he earned a B.S. in Petroleum Geology. He served as a jet pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years, receiving his gold aviator wings and achieving the rank of Captain in the USMC Reserves. He then went on to study nuclear engineering at the University of Washington. Phil married Carole Marie Cummings in 1960. His career as an engineer took him and his family to many different places, including Washington, Alabama, California, and Thailand. Later in life, he chose a different career path and earned a M.S. in Library Science at San Jose State University. He was then hired by the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., where he worked for many years in the Department Library, eventually rising to become Director. Phil Haymond is survived by his former wife Carole Haymond; his children: Peter (Dusadee), Falls Church, VA; Alan (Karen), Greenwich, NY; Andy (Colleen), Gridley, CA; Elizabeth Allen (Spencer), Spanish Fork, UT; Ruel (Tresa), Santaquin, UT; Martha Dobler (Andreas), Ontario, CA; Rebekah McKnight (Gary), Springfield, VA; and Esther Gozo (Alban), West Valley City, UT; his grandchildren: Faye, Hazel, Baxter, Brianna, lan, Brody, Michael, Maycee, Layna, Ammon, Samuel, Daniel, Grace, Mariah, Joseph, Erika, Johanna, Katrina, Andrea, Trey, Kyle, Elijah, and Zavier; his siblings: David (Joan), Provo, UT (currently in Lima, Peru); Paula Myres (Keith), Pleasant Grove, UT; (currently in Bowling Green, KY); Maryan Pennington (David), Billings, MT; Creed, Salt Lake City, UT; Bradley (Becky), Corvallis, OR; Jason, Springville, and his loving, longtime companion Patricia Alexiou, Baltimore, MD. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Memorial services will be held at the Kolob 8th Ward Meetinghouse, 840 S. 400 E. in Springville on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 1:OOpm. Guests are invited to greet family members from 12:00·12:50pm. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
