A Couple Memories of Grandpa Poulson, written by his granddaughter, Kristin Poulson Collins

Contributor: finnsh Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

Written 6 December 2010 I remember G&G driving their motorhome all around in the winter to get out of the cold. I don't remember if they did it while they still lived in CA or only after they moved to Utah. They used to take a lot of pictures/slides of flowers and such that I thought were VERY boring. He used to polish jade and probably other stones. I remember the patio they had outside of the CA house where he showed us his polisher and maybe he had a cutter?? They would always take us to the ducks in San Rafel. I don't know if they went there just for us or often. I believe he would read the paper in the living room. The San Rafel house was when I first remember realizing they didn't sleep together. I thought that was strange. He had a certain smell. I can smell it when I think of him. It is a warm probably shaving cream smell. He used to make great facial expressions. He was always trying to trick us. He loved taking pictures with a large camera. I remember on Cloud Way him taking those pictures in front of our house. I thought it was odd, but went along with it. Probably the light was better outside or something. Of course one of my main memories was him riding my bike, banana seat and sissy bar and all, backwards. To this day, I don't know how he managed that. We thought it was fantastic! I also remember at the Cloud Way house they had a camper in the back of a truck that could raise up when they parked and then be lowered for driving. I liked the way the door 'appeared' when it was raised up. He used to call I think Erin Pocahontis (spelling??) He teased like that. He was retired as long as I knew him but I know he worked with engines. The tip of his finger was missing. Just a little bit of a nail on it. I think it was a middle or ring finger.

A Few Memories of Grandpa Poulson

Contributor: finnsh Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

Written by his granddaughter, Lara Poulson Barney, 6 December 2010 Grandpa Poulson loved to take pictures. He and grandma showed us slideshows every time we came out for vacation. I liked the slideshows better and better as I got older. He was a good photographer. I remember he always seemed a little whiskery. And he had a half-whisper of a voice. I remember him and grandma driving around in the RV. Didn't we call it something else - the MT - or something like that? It was only occasionally that they would let us into the RV to look around. It was always a big treat to see inside. Grandpa was always up for a walk. I remember walking with him to Noah's canyon near our Cloud Way house. He loved to get outside. He had a plaid hat he wore a lot. And he wore a lot of bolo ties with stones on them he had polished himself. He had a collection of polished rocks. As he got older he tolerated noise and activity less and less. I remember having to be quiet in their house when we went on vacation to Utah. We played in the basement or outside a lot. In the evening he used to get out the lawn chairs and sit under the carport and talk. He would always get up during meals and walk around, too. I remember being told that he couldn't go to church anymore because he couldn't sit still that long. He was kind of nervous. He had a red pickup truck for a long time that just sat in the carport. He would open the hood and look at the engine sometimes. I visited him in the nursing home sometimes. He was in the locked ward because they were afraid he would wander away. He had begun to wander at home and that is what finally tipped the scales on the decision to put him in a home. He was beginning to show dementia. The last time I saw him he was pretty quiet. I was with Jon and I sat with grandpa in his room in the nursing home and talked to him about old times, and how he used to visit us in California. I don't remember his response.
