Autobiography of Orpha Elsa Hanlon

Contributor: DdraigGoch Created: 8 months ago Updated: 8 months ago

I was born January 12, 1903 at Pike West Virginia to Lewis Henry Hanlin (later changed to Hanlon for convenience in issuing pay checks to other employees with the same name at The Eureka Oil Co.) and Maggie Grim. My mother died when I was only eleven months old and neither my father nor any of my relatives ever discussed my early life with me. In those days children were taught that they were to "be seen and not heard". I learned my lesson well and as I grew older I was far too shy to ask questions. I sensed that my father's grief over Mother's death was too deep for him to talk about it. So I waited until I was old enough to ask questions of other relatives but by that time they didn't remember too much of the things of my childhood that I longed to know. They couldn't seem to agree on where I was born. I finally decided from the information I had gathered that I was born in Pike WV. I had one sister, Bessie Edna, who was three years older than I was. We were taken to Grandmother Hanlin's home the day Mother was buried but she was growing older and did not feel that she could take care of two small children. Both Grandmother and Grandfather Hanlin had been married before and had children by their first marriages. Grandmother had been married twice before she married Grandfather Hanlin. Her first marriage was to Elija Mosser and her second marriage was to Rison Grim (early spelling was Grimm). My mother was one of the children born of this second marriage. Both of her husbands died quite young. After Grandfather Hanlin's first wife, Lavina Mosser, sister of Elija Mosser, died, Grandmother Grim and Grandfather Hanlin met and married. Grandmother Grim/Hanlin was my mother's mother and my father's stepmother. Mother and Dad fell in love soon after Grandmother Grim and Grandfather Hanlin were married, and were married quite young. Grandfather's sister, Melissa Gatrel took care of my sister and me for a short time after Mother's death but she was older and had a retarded son, Alex, to care for so she felt that she wasn't able to care for two small children. My father's sister, Sarah Hanlin Rickey, said she would take us. She had two children of her own, both boys, Howard and Harold, just about the same age as my sister and me. Aunt Sarah was a kind, wonderful woman and took care of us like we were her own. Even so, I was very much aware that I was in someone else's home and being cared for by someone who was not my mother. I had an overpowering desire, even at that early age, to be a "good girl" and not cause any trouble. I was heartbroken when I did anything that caused anyone trouble of any kind. My father often told me that he never had to punish me for anything. He only had to look at me to let me know I had displeased him in some way and I would feel completely crushed when that happened.

His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the executions of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Soviet historians portray Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.
