Memories of Aunt Carol Chadwick Wilson

04/18/2018
Carol I have a number of fond memories of my Aunt Carol (Carol Chadwick Wilson). One of the first being that I was not allowed to go to her graduation from nursing school or her wedding. Now you might wonder how those are fond memories but think about a child six or under going to either one of those events and what it would be like for the child and the parent. When I was 8-9 years old I was invited to go stay with Aunt Carol and Uncle Milton in Salt Lake City. I believe they lived just off of Redwood Road. At that time it was on the out skirts of town almost in the country. While at Aunt Carol's, I attended a 4th of July parade and watched David O. McKay as he drove by in a convertible as part of the parade. I remember learning a number of housekeeping tips from Aunt Carol: cleaning out the sink and rinsing the dish rag with cold water so it doesn't sour, making my bed correctly (with square corners) and then making sure to pick everything up and put it away before going to bed. Aunt Carol even bought me a pair of summer pajama’s because all I had was my long flannel one and it was a rather warm summer. While visiting Aunt Carol she would let me go to the community pool every afternoon to swim. I loved swimming and playing around in the pool and it took up a lot of time. I am sure it was time Aunt Carol rested, or felt peace and quiet while I was away. My father became quit ill while on a family outing in Island Park. He had not felt good for a number of weeks but this particular weekend he became very ill. We were concerned that we weren't even going to get his camp tailor home. Aunt Carol attended to him and gave him a scolding about going to the Dr. She made him promise that he would go on Monday morning. She then proceeded to make me promise that he follow through. It turned out that he was really ill and ended up in the hospital to remove one of his kidney’s that was poisoning his system. During the following months my father had two major heart attacks and passed away by November. Aunt Carol continually checked on him and when he was in the Idaho Falls hospital she made sure we were aware of his condition at all times. She not only cared for my father, her brother, but for the rest of the family. Aunt Carol was one to let others know what she felt to be right. One of my brothers was not acting appropriately at my father’s funeral and Aunt Carol approached him with a “Scotch Blessing.” He straightened up some after that. (He was smoking and drinking while we were having a family dinner at the church house.) Aunt Carol was one for appropriate behavior. As her mother became older, Aunt Carol tended to her needs. She assured she was living in a comfortable friendly place. When grandma became ill she helped to care for her health needs. She'd make sure that the simplest things were done, like the daily house keeping chores. She either did them herself or she arranged to have them done. There is a wooden barrel that sits in my bedroom(used for a laundry basket) that I got from my grandmother's estate. That barrel originally belonged to Aunt Carol was given to grandmother to help store some belongings. As a Registered Nurse, Aunt Carol was well liked by those she worked with and for. She was one who became a great source for anything to do with the proper care of a patient. If the machines malfunctioned or quit working she knew how to care for the patient without the machines or how to fix the machines. She trained and supervised a number of nurses. Aunt Carol, just a year or so before her own death from cancer cared for her sister-in-law. She took her into her home and watched over her every need. Carol made sure she cared for the physical needs and the emotional needs of her sister-in-law. They laughed and cried together. When Aunt Carol became ill she had to learn to accept help from others. Always resistant to let others serve her she learned to accept their service. Whenever I visited her I always saw a smile and I left uplifted yet sad to know she didn't have much longer with us. This lady cared for others, believe her life’s mission was as a care giver. She attended to the sick whether family or stranger. This was a wonderful nurse, daughter, sister, wife, mother, and aunt;she was a lady.
