Maryann Simpson (Powell) in Duchesne, Utah

Contributor: syohchooch Created: 3 years ago Updated: 3 years ago

Maryann Simpson Powell was my Great, Great Grandmother. Cindy LaCrue mentioned in the history of William James Powell, that it is not known how or when Maryann moved from Richfield to Duchesne. However, my grandfather, Carlos Batrum Marsing remembers GG Grandmother Maryann. Grandfather Carlos Marsing and his sister, Emma Caroline Marsing (Remund) were raised by their uncle, Martin Luther Marsing and aunt, Lucy Fidelia Powell (Marsing). They (M. L. and Lucy) built the first brick house in Duchense, Utah. The house still stands on the southwest corner of 200 West and Highway 40 in Duchesne. Martin Luther Marsing and Lucy Fidelia Powell (daughter of William James Powell and Maryann Simpson) raised their family there. Grandpa Carlos remembers that GG Maryann lived across the street from M.L. and Lucy in a small house on the southeast corner of 200 West in Duchesne. Grandpa Carlos was 12 years old when GG Maryann died. He remembers that he would milk a cow and take the milk across the street to Maryann. It was also apparent that her daughter, Lucy and Martin Luther pretty much took care of her and assisted her while she lived in Duchesne until her death. Although Grandpa Carlos Marsing was not directly related to Maryann, he called her Grandma Powell. The genealogy of Grandpa Carlos is a little convoluted but Grandpa Carlos had a sound basis for calling her Grandma Powell. Grandpa Carlos Marsing married Thenelda Powell who was a daughter of Joseph Hyrum Powell, son of Maryann and William Joseph Powell. So, Maryann was my grandmother, Thenelda Powell Marsing's grandmother. Grandpa Carlos Marsing was raised as if he was one of the children and son of M. L. Marsing and Lucy Fidelia Powell. Therefore, his cousins were actually grandchildren of Maryann Powell and he like his cousins would refer to her as Grandma Powell.
