A Little Story of Joyce Marcene Jorgensen Hulse

07/23/2021
On May 5th, 1937 Joyce Marcene Jorgensen was born to Joseph Franklin and Elizabeth Gerrard Jorgensen. She had three brothers, Joe, Billy, and Bob and one sister Mary to greet her. A few years later another sister, Betty was born. Joyce attended the Blackfoot schools beginning at Elmwood Elementary. Her father Joseph was a sheep herder, and the family liked to go up to the hills to help. On one of these trips, Joyce decided to learn how to drive the family car. She drove the car up a tree and decided she didn't want to learn that bad after all and never did. Joyce had a a son, John Boyd on 1 December 1953. Joyce and Sheldon met in 1956. Sheldon was a truck driver at this time. In 1958, Sheldon was driving through McCammon when he got "nailed" for an overweight truck. Sheldon went before the judge and paid the fine. The judge told him to come back anytime even to get married. Sheldon and Joyce had decided to get married, so they went to McCammon and went to the same judge on January 21, 1958. After he married them, he took Sheldon's money and turned to Joyce and gave it to her for a wedding present. The judge remembered Sheldon from before. They made their home in Blackfoot. On April 2, 1959, Sherri was born. Lisa followed on September 14, 1962. Randy came alona a year later on September 3, 1963. Tammy ws born two years later on March 8, 1965. When the kids started school, the family moved to the Riverside area. The family raised an occasional lamb, and rabbits. The kids would feed and water them. When it was time to butcher them, Joyce was right there. One thing always baffled her though, once the rabbits made it to the freezer, they seemed to disappear fast. Then one day during the potato harvest she came home early from working on the combine. The mystery was solved. While Sherri was babysitting the younger kids she would fry up a rabbit for their lunch. Next to the rabbits was the garden. If you ask the kids they would say it was a large garden. Joyce considered it not large enough. When the vegetables were ready to be picked, Joyce was always ready for the canning to begin. Sherri says, "She canned everything." The girls would get so sick of seeing tomatoes. They were everywhere! In 1978 Sheldon and Joyce bought the trailer house and moved into town. Joyce started working at Idaho Potato Packers in 1979. She worked there for about 5 years. She then went to work at Nonperil's slice and dice. She worked about 4 years there until a severe allergic reaction to chlorene lead her to Russet Potato then finally to Lambert Produce. She enjoyed working at Lamberts and with the crew there. She has made many friends through her work. She mostly loved to tease her co-workers., especially her boss, Kevin King. After her health caused her to quit she greatly missed everyone.
