Remembering grandpa

Contributor: dandrew Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

I was the second oldest grandchild of R and Inez. These were delightful, kind, loving grandparents. While not wealthy by the world’s standards they always had plenty to share with family and friends. While it was never spoken you knew you belonged to these people. They were stalwart members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, setting a wonderful example for children and grandchildren. Grandma was an achiever; she knit sweaters and pieced quilts for her grandchildren. I was in awe that she planted a large garden even into her older years. I was amazed that she could keep it weeded. I assisted her on wash days with the old ringer type washer. Taking the clothes outside to hang on the longest clothesline I have ever known. My grandparents owned a dairy farm and I loved to go to the barn to assist with the milking chores. Back then I never minded holding a cow’s tail, which must have been to keep me out of the way. As I grew older I helped clean out the barn after milking. I literally shoveled cow **** to the opening and flung it into the corral, and it was an adventure rather than a chore in those days. I collected eggs in the chicken coop and picked apples in their orchard. I shall ever be grateful for their influence in my life. These were ordinary people who had a profound influence on my life.

I remember my family was visiting, it may have been a family reunion Grandma and Grandpas house was full and kids where sleeping outside. My mom, Amanda Prows, put my sister, Karen and I in the back of Grandpas white truck. He had a sleeper shell on the back of his truck. So Karen and I woke up to Grandpa driving off in his truck, he had water to change, and the barn to visit. I remember we tried to get out but we were locked in. We hit the windows and yelled for Grandpa - he didn't hear us. We drove around for what felt like hours, the problem was we had to go to the bathroom. When Grandpa finally returned home, my Mom ran out to let us out of the truck -- I remember feeding the baby lambs and cows with him. I loved hearing him tell stories about his time in the mountains.

Life timeline of Lucius R Swasey

Lucius R Swasey was born on 23 Nov 1899
Lucius R Swasey was 4 years old when The Wright brothers make their first attempt to fly with the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were two American aviators, engineers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1904–05 the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.
Lucius R Swasey was 17 years old when Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was forced to abdicate in the February Revolution, ending three centuries of Romanov rule. Nicholas II or Nikolai II, known as Saint Nicholas in the Russian Orthodox Church, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March 1917. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the executions of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Soviet historians portray Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.

Lucius R Swasey was 42 years old when World War II: The Imperial Japanese Navy made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, intending to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
