I'm thankful for my Grandpa Mendenhall

Contributor: SouthPawPhilly Created: 9 months ago Updated: 9 months ago

My name is Debra Hastings Mitchell, and I am the daughter of Janice Mendenhall and Loyal Dee Hastings. When I was eight years old my dad baptized me. We lived in Orem, Utah at the time and my grandparents lived in Mapleton, Utah. My grandpa, Aaron Bruce Mendenhall confirmed me a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and gave me the gift of the Holy Ghost. I am so thankful for this wonderful gift. Even though I was a small girl at the time, I often think of this experience and remember many details about it. I am thankful that my father and grandfather were worthy and able to give me the gifts that will enable me to progress in this life and return to my Heavenly Father.

Loyal Hastings (left) and Manuel Hastings(right) were the very best of friends. When Loyal was at BYU, he would go to Farmington, N.M. in the summers and work as a painter for Manuel's business. The first thing he would do at the end of the day was work the crossword puzzle in the Farmington Daily Times Newspaper. Manuel's father, Monroe, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then taught the gospel to Loyal's parents. At Manuel's funeral, Loyal's son, Danny, said that from that one conversation 100 people in Loyal's family are faithful members of the Church. Janice, Loyal's wife, says that they are very, very busy sharing the gospel on the other side of the veil.
