Cold Hot Dogs

Contributor: Andrea Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

For five years I lived right next door to my Grandpa, Larry. He had polio as a child and the only memories I have of him he either walked with a cane or was in a wheelchair. When I was in preschool my mom and grandma would go to work and I would get to spend the day with grandpa. When he would pick me up from preschool he would always have a gold can of caffeine free diet coke in the cup holder and sometimes he would surprise me with an idaho spud in the jockey box. When we got home we would make lunch. Lunch usually consisted of either cold hot dogs or Vienna sausages and a can of condensed cream of chicken soup heated up in a bowl in the microwave. After we ate he would go to sleep and I learned how to put my own barney movie in the VCR and how to rewind it. When I was just 9 years old my grandpa passed away. I can't wait for the day we are reunited and can continue building our relationship and when I can see him walk with ease. I loved my grandpa. He taught me to have the love, patience and compassion for elderly that I still have today. I miss him all the time, but I've never missed those cold hot dogs.
