Katherine Cheney (Hamblin)

Daddy was born down in the timbers in a log house by the Snake River, or so I was told. Grandma said Aunt Kate was there, helping, and the doctor came. Birth was at 3:30 a.m. He was her last living child to be born. I hoped they would have recorded a weight, but they didn't. I have heard from 9 plus pounds to 11 pounds. Either way he was a whopper and Grandma was tiny. Aunt Kate was the second wife of David Cheney, Dad's grandfather. from the certificate we find: Place of Birth was Madison, "Thornton" as the city [which is where the post office was]no: 385-102-033-133st. The state file number 142341. According to the birth certificate she was age 43 and Grandpa was 41 at the time. Dr. Southerland M.D. attended. the address listed was Rexburg, Idaho, meaning I think where it was filed. The date it was filed was 6-10-1926.

Catherine (Kate) Hamblin homesteaded 160 acres of land just west of Victor, Idaho. It was "duly established and consummated in conformity to law" on 15 December 1902 and recorded in Bingham County on 23 May 1906 after she "proved up" on her claim. Being as she was a single woman we can assume she had help from her father and her brothers. In a family history it is mentioned that Aunt Kate ran an hotel in Victor and the Census shows that she was living with her parents up until 1920. 40 acres of this Homestead was later sold to my Great Uncle James Hyrum Jones on 28 February 1911. Approximately 28 acres of this parcel were later sold to James's mother, Susan Mariar Jones and portions of it remain in our Jones family today. For you that are unfamiliar with the family connections between the Hamblin's and the Jones's, Susan's daughter Mary Evaline Jones married William Haines Hamblin in 1902. William Hamblin was Kate's brother.
