TRIBUTES have been paid to former county councillor and community volunteer extraordinaire Lady Pender, who has died aged 70.
The Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, from North Court, in Tilmanstone, was this year made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for her outstanding contribution to local life over several decades.
The village flag was flown at half-mast following news she had died at Kent & Canterbury hospital after heart problems.
Friends described her as “one of the nicest, most determined people you could ever hope to meet”.
Fellow Tilmanstone resident Rose Kirk said: “Lots of people say nice things about people, especially when they die, but with Lady Pender every single one is true.
“She kept putting off surgery so that everyone from the village could celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at North Court. That’s just another sign of how generous she was to everyone with her time.”
Lady Pender was chairman of the governors at Sandwich Technology School and Sir Roger Manwood’s School, Sandwich, and a county councillor for 16 years.
Local Conservative chairman Cllr Keith Morris said: “Her focus was always on what she could do to help improve the lives of other people, especially the disadvantaged and more vulnerable.
“Julia was an inspiration and will be sorely missed.”
Lady Pender grew up in Sussex before moving to Tilmanstone in 1975.
A short service was due to be held yesterday (Wednesday) at St Andrew’s Church, Tilmanstone, followed by burial in the churchyard.
A thanksgiving service was held at St Clement’s Church, Sandwich, last week.
She is survived by husband Lord Pender, three children Emma, Mary Anne and Harry, and five grandchildren.
