Joyce Osborn's Memories of Gene Stone
12/24/2022Joyce Ahlstrom Osborn Evans was a good friend of Gene's. After Gene died, Joyce cared for Michele Stone's daughter, Jane, as if she were her own granddaughter. This was a letter she sent along with a book titled, "Something to Remember Me By."

Dear Jane,
This book is a story of a Grandma and a sweet little Granddaughter. As I read it my thoughts turned to your Grandma Stone who died before you were born. I'm anxious to tell you something about her so you can have my memories to remember through the years. Your Mother will tell you about her as the days and months go by, but they will very somewhat from mine.
We, Grandma Stone and Grandma Osborn, met many years ago at a special family camp called "Dinkey Creek" in the Fresno mountains. We became friends at that time but even better friends when we both happened to move at the same time to Hacienda Heights, California, just a few years later.
We served together in the various auxiliaries of the church -- Stake Y.W.M.I.A., Ward Relief Society and the Stake Relief Society -- which comprised over twenty years.
During those years we planned, prepared and presented numerous programs, activities, dinners, road shows, music, dance, and speech festivals, plus a host of other events. Grandpa Stone was also involved in the above doings and helped us out in many ways.
We shopped together, went on trips together, to Utah and Northern California, and places in between. We, with our companion husbands, went out to dinner at the "Sizzler" almost every Wednesday for many months and always had a lot of laughs at those times.
We also worked in California-Utah Women together, in fact, she got me into this organization where we served for many years.
Jane, your Grandma Gene was one beautiful, wonderful, choice and lovely lady. She was sharp and smart and had high standards and ideals. She was amazing at working out every detail in everything she did, and you could depend on her thoughts and vision to always be worthwhile, workable and meaningful. She was so fun and we laughed a lot. She was good-natured, good-hearted, and always positive.
I've never known anyone life her to do so many good deeds for so many people. Those who were stranded at a service station in some remote area or any person, wherever or whatever his or her circumstances, were taken in, fed, clothed, and assisted for a day, a month or years. She was always aware of helping the helpless back to helping themselves.
She was a true and noble friend and, more than that, we were sisters. Since neither one of us had a sister this filled a void in our lives to have and share each other. She gave me treasures of truth, examples, strengths, and pleasures beyond measure to live by.
She was a Marvelous Mother, a Grand and Great Grandma, a Wonderful Wife, a Devoted Daughter, a Sweet Sister, a Fabulous Friend. She was the Best Friend ever and will be my Best Friend forever.
I have pictures and some other momentos that I'll send you when I come across them. Please know I want to always be a Grandma to you. I'll never take Grandma Stone's place, but I'd like to share you until such a time as you will meet and greet and be with her.
She had a sweet and solid testimony of Jesus Christ. She never wavered in her beliefs, and her acts and actions of service proved her love for the Lord and His Church.
Always remember that She Loves You and always remember I Love You.
