From the book "The Maury Family Tree" by Sue West Teague on pages 250-251:
John Minor Maury died of yellow fever after courageous conduct in routing pirates in the West Indies, buried at sea June 24, 1823. Entered US Navy 1809 at age 13 as a Midshipman. He sailed on a merchant ship to China and with four men was left on one of the Marquesa Islands to procure sandalwood. War with England broke out and the five were left for two years on the island, subsisting on fish and coconut. He and one other survivor were rescued by Capt. David Porter, commander of the Essex. He was commissioned Lt. 28 June 1811.
